overall,
It’s moody collage of song, sound, texture, rhythm, and sometimes
words that aims to work together to work as a
composition. Being
mostly improvised, sometimes it works.
the music:
I’m not into the whole ‘music as fashion’ thing. I really don’t
care if it’s high brow or low brow or no brow (totally obscure),
if I like it and it fits the 'theme' of the show, I play it.
The show is basically for people who feel music a few layers below
the skin.
the host:
I discovered WZBC in December of 1981. I used to tape it whenever
I was in Boston and then spent every cent I had on the records.
I'd bring them back to Florida and play them for friends, and one
day wondered into WFIT studios, after taking a fishbowl ride in
his car, popping some tapes in and dropping a bunch of band names
he had read about but hadn't heard (Florida was a few steps ahead
of... Arkansas back then), I was immediately put me on the air. This
was fall of 1983. I was 15 at the time. The first
song I played was
"Re-make, Re-model" from Roxy Music's 1st LP (1972).
Influenced more and more by WZBC's rare and innovative NCP
shows, I later started one of Florida's first radio spots focused
primarily on experimental & "out" musics at WFIT. And continued doing
'rock' shows during the day.
From around 1982 to '87 I played in a surf / new wave band in Melbourne
Beach FL called
Locals Only (1982-87)
(see link to MP3s below) and
now play in a band from LA
called
The Movies
.
I still do rock show’s occasionally on the Z, when someone else
can’t. I’ll also occasionally fill in for Victor on Lucid Sounds
(Saturday AM), and sometimes do Test Patterns on Friday nights. (Not
some new hallucinogen but the ZBC show at 6pm Fridays featuring
a different artist/label/genre weekly.) Sometimes I play music live
(very rarely)as
The Very.
